What is ESTA?

The Eastern States Theater Association is a Member Regional Organization, Region II, of the American Association of Community Theatre. It is comprised of the five member organizations representing the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. Its primary functions are to hold the annual ESTA Festival to select the "best of the best" of the ESTA region and to encourage and support original works through education and networking.

On a sad note and for those of us who have known Annette Procunier, a much respected ESTA and AACT adjudicator, her long-time friend and travel companion, The Rev. Canon Margaret Johnson, died suddenly on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the age of 88. As an expression of your sympathy, memorial donations to Trinity - All Saints Anglican Church of Canada, 1024 Bala Falls Road, BALA, ONTARIO, CANADA will be greatly appreciated. Messages of condolence can be offered to the family at www.cavillfuneralhome.com. ESTA will be making a $100 donation in Margaret's name.

On a happier note, the plans have been finalized for the locations of the ESTA EXCOMM retreat in early October and the full ESTA Board meeting in early November. ESTA By Laws and Policy Guide both have written stipulations as to when meetings should be held. Beginning with the October EXCOMM meeting, ESTA will follow this structure.

ESTA Full Board meetings (per By Laws)

  • One (1) meeting within thirty (30) days after the close of the Annual ESTA Regional Community Theater Festival; meeting date identified and planning begun when the Festival date is announced

  • One (1) end-of-year meeting within the last three (3) months of the calendar year (currently early November) ESTA Executive Committee (EXCOMM) meetings (per policy)

  • Weekend retreat in October (1-3 days depending upon need)

  • Morning of the end-of-year meeting

All EXCOMM and BOARD members are asked to review closely the documents that arrive in their email boxes and to come to the meetings prepared to discuss changes. Having a stable platform on which to work is key to ESTA success. Not having read the documents will not result in a delay but rather a vote made by people who may be missing pertinent information.

The primary goals at these upcoming meetings are: (1) to establish the operating rules for ESTA to use going forward, (2) to provide ourselves with the online tools needed to do our best work for ESTA, (3) to update the documents governing ESTA business functions and (4) to begin preparations for the regional 2019 ESTA Festival and to support the national AACTFestival 2019 being held in Gettysburg, PA, on June 18-22, 2019.

Speaking of AACT, the AACTFest 2019 page contains many details including logos, images and ad formats. Since the AACT festival is in Region II for 2019, it is appropriate for every state to advertise this festival whenever possible both online and in print. Please use the information from the above-linked page in your advertising.

Thank you. Looking forward to seeing some of you in October and November.
